Bi National Meeting Between Indonesia and Philippines on SSTC Framework

Bi-National Steering committee meeting between Indonesia and Philippines was held on Friday 10 December 2021 virtually. The meeting was attended by some institutions in both countries such as the Population Commission of Philippines, National Population and Family Planning Board of the Republic of Indonesia, The Ministry of State Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia, UNFPA Indonesia dan UNFPA Philippines.

This cooperation is under South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) framework. SSTC is a development and humanitarian programming modality mandated by the Member States of the United Nations as articulated in numerous international agreements and United Nations General Assembly resolutions. In the spirit of SSTC, the meeting aims to increase and improve communications among both countries, leading to a greater awareness of common issues and wider access to available knowledge and experience.

Indonesia and the Philippines are two countries that share more in common than mere borders and geographical regions. They are facing similar challenges in developing such as maternal mortality rates and prevalence of gender-based violence. Based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Indonesia and the Philippines on July 2019 in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, it is concerning cooperation in the field of Population, Family Planning, Reproductive Health, Gender Mainstreaming, and related issues have been translated into concrete action in the spirit of mutual respect and interest. Some of the exchange models have been regularly implemented through technical training, high-level visits, sharing knowledge programs, and technical assistance.

In the year 2021, several activities involving Indonesia and the Philippines have been carried out virtually. Several joint activities were implemented in 2021, namely 1) International Webinar: International Women’s Day 2021; 2) Knowledge Sharing Program for Bangsamoro Auntomous Muslim Mindanao of the Philippines Youth Muslim Leaders; 3) Global Family Forum on Best Practice in Reproductive Health and Stunting Reduction.

The steering committe meeting result agreed for some agendas in the year 2022. Started by MoU Extention discussion at the beginning of the year 2022, continue with some programs such as Development of SSTC promotional multimedia materials, scoping mission on countries with well-established policy and program on adolescent pregnancy, CPD Side Event 55, Sharing Expertise on Muslim Religious Leaders Activity,  Roll out of Comprehensive Gender and Health Education for Youth, Expansion of SSTC strategies in Tawi-Tawi and Lanao, Seminar on Islamic Perspective on Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning, Knowledge Sharing with ASEAN Countries, Bridging  Leadership, Knowledge Sharing on Bangsamoro Autonomous Muslim Mindanao, Center of Excellence International Knowledge Hub on Supply Chain Management, and the last is Reproductive Health Intervention to Prevent Stunting.  Innovative approaches on the sharing of the lesson learned and best practices through the South-South and Triangular Cooperation need to be continuously developed, revisited, and implemented. This potential collaboration as modalities for better partnership and accelerator in achieving global as well as national development agenda.
