Afghanistan Studying Maternal and Child Health Management with Indonesia

A total of 38 members of the Afghan delegation arrived in Yogyakarta to take part in the Capacity Building on Maternal Health, Children, and Family Welfare Program, Friday, November 4, 2022.

This training is a grant from Indonesia to Afghanistan through the Ministry of Finance’s International Development Cooperation Fund (LDKPI), whose technical implementation is overseen by the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN). The activity was held at Hotel Santika Yogyakarta from 4 – 10 November 2022.

Head of BKKBN Dr. (H.C) dr. Hasto Wardoyo Sp.OG (K), who opened the activity online, said that this opportunity was an opportunity to learn from each other.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented by the Director for South and Central Asia, Jatmiko Heru Prasetyo, who had approved this training grant, as well as the Ministry of Finance’s LDKPI, represented by Leny Andrayani.

“BKKBN has also been given an additional task as a stunting reduction coordinator in Indonesia, with a target of reducing the stunting rate to less than 14 percent in 2024,” said Hasto in his remarks.

Hasto also invited the Afghan government to pay attention to the problem of stunting for a better future for their nation’s next generation.

As for your information, Afghanistan is currently experiencing a public welfare upheaval which has an impact on the decline in people’s welfare. What the Indonesian government is doing is the embodiment of a free and active foreign policy and legally it is a follow-up to the agreement between the two countries as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This is in line with the government’s commitment to providing capacity-building assistance during the 2014-2019 Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla’s visit to Afghanistan in 2018 and can be realized in 2022 in the form of international training in Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X represented by the Head of the Health Service drg. Pembayun expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BKKBN, and parties participating in international training for the State of Afghanistan.

“Hopefully the calm and conducive atmosphere of Yogyakarta can succeed in this important training, especially for improving the welfare of women and children in Afghanistan,” said Sri Sultan.

Not only receiving material in class, the participants will also conduct field visits so they can see and learn about the practice of managing maternal and child health services and family planning.

There were six points of field visits conducted, namely the Gedong Tengen Health Center, Sadewa RSKIA, the religious-based women’s organization Aisyiyah, Rifka Anisa, RPTA Smart Park, and the management of Acceptor Family Welfare Improvement Business (UPPKA).

Head of BKKBN DIY Representative Shodiqin said that he had technically conditioned all the points of the field visit. The field visit was greeted enthusiastically by the training participants.

“Our goal is indeed to learn by observing the practice in the field so that we can apply it in our country,” said one of the delegates, Gulpari Nazari.

Meanwhile, accompanying participants from Afghanistan dr. Matiullah expressed his gratitude for holding this training. Matiullah said that economic conditions and socio-economic stability in Afghanistan played a major role in the decline in the quality of health services in Afghanistan. This is exacerbated by geographical conditions and the uneven distribution of the population.

Therefore, he said, learning directly from Indonesia is a valuable experience. Moreover, currently, Afghanistan has a fairly high fertility rate of 5.36.

“We recruit training participants through careful selection so that participants can make the results of the training a model for developing the quality of maternal and child health services and family planning,” said Matiullah.

Thus the expected results for grant recipients are increased knowledge and capacity of regulators or administrators in managing maternal and child health policies and family planning.Author: FX Danarto SY
