Where: South Cilacap, Cilacap Regency, Central Java Province

Date of establishment: 29 October 2017

Kampung KB “GADIS” is located in Tegalreja subdistrict, part of South Cilacap District, Cilacap Regency. The neighborhood is a mix of a densely populated residential area and a commercial/office area, with similarly eclectic occupational demography, such as day laborers, sellers, civil servants, company employees, and business owners. It encompasses 10 RW – some are located alongside the railways.

The Kampung KB “GADIS” in Tegalrejo, set against an urban setting, was established on October 29, 2017. The name “GADIS” is an acronym of Guyub, Aman, Damai, Indah Sejahtera (Harmonious, Safe, Peaceful, Serene and Prosperous) that represents how the neighborhood is envisioned. Kampung KB “GADIS” brought an enormous change to the neighborhood, especially the settlement along the railways. The area had negative reputation as a slum area that was unsafe, prone to drug abuse, and where community engagement was lackluster. The presence of Kampung KB and its associated activities has transformed the area into a neat, attractive, and warm neigborhood. Initially implemented in just one RW (RW 04), Kampung KB “GADIS” has since been replicated to the entire RWs, covering the whole subdistrict, following the standard Model Kampung KB.

Today, Kampung KB “GADIS” has earned various awards. Not just regency and provincial-level awards, on National Family Day 2019 on July 6, 2019 in South Kalimantan, Kampung KB “GADIS” was named the National Model Kampung KB by the government through the National Population and Family Planning Board.

To improve work opportunities and income, Kampung KB “GADIS” is developing several potential businesses:

  • Home Industry Business:
    1. Handicrafts and upcycled items
    2. Shoe, wallet, and bag production
    3. Snacks, e.g. cheese sticks, crackers, and a variety of traditional snacks
    4. Traditional dishes, coffee from the Center of Information and Counseling for Adolescents
  • Open Space Development and Hydroponic Planting
A Kampung KB park nearby the railways started with just 250 square meter of land. It has been expanded to 500 square meter and developed into a kid-friendly space. Hydroponic planting, usually done in one’s backyard, is incorporated in the park. This park is developed and maintained using community funding, including from the businesses developed in Kampung KB “GADIS”.
  • Support for Kampung KB “GADIS”
Aside from using its own resources and donations from visitors, the activities in Kampung KB “GADIS” have also benefitted from the support of various CSR programs, such as from PT Pertamina RU IV, Baznas, Program Kotaku, and PT Holcim, as well as several local government work units.
