Attracted by Other Countries, This is the Success of the Family Planning Program in Indonesia

Head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) Dr (H.C) dr. Hasto Wardoyo Sp.OG (K) became the Indonesian delegate at The International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP 2022) which was held in Pattaya, Thailand 14-17 November. On this occasion, Hasto was entrusted to be the main speaker (keynote speaker) with the theme National Health Insurance for Family Planning or National Health Insurance for Family Planning. Hasto explained Indonesia’s own family planning access services are still not fully covered by the government through the Health Social Security Administration Agency (BPJS Kesehatan). Nevertheless, his party provides facilities and services for contraceptive tools and drugs which are fully borne by the BKKBN, alias free.

“This is what we need to emphasize even though in Indonesia it does not include BPJS insurance, people can get good access to contraceptive services. We also convey the amount of the budget provided from year to year to support family planning activities,” said Hasto, in a written statement, quoted on Wednesday (16/11/2022). Hasto said that there are many challenges in the family planning program in Indonesia, including its geographical location as an archipelagic country. In addition, multi-ethnicity is also a challenge for the Indonesian government. Indonesia itself, said Hasto, is known by countries in the world as a successful example of a country that has successfully implemented a balanced population growth program through family planning. For this success, Indonesia even won the 2022 United Nations Population Award (UNPA) from the United Nations (UN).

Hasto said that the ICFP 2022 participating countries were very enthusiastic and wanted to learn a lot about successful tips for building the family planning program. “For them, Indonesia is a place to be able to learn related to how to communicate with religious leaders (religious leaders), for example, so training related to building this communication like the Philippines is always interested in things like that,” he said. “Second, the problem is that we provide more services to midwives, so they are interested in the role of midwives because midwives provide nearly 70 percent of contraceptive services.

So this is an interesting thing, “continued Hasto. In Hasto’s opinion, building good communication with a number of levels of society in order to make the family planning program successful in Indonesia is part of human rights. “Because human rights are related to access, so if we can easily make passive services like Pak Jokowi’s directions, not only sending but also delivering can provide services to end users, in villages, that’s good related to reproductive rights, and humans must get service, “he said. Hasto further added, in the ICFP 2022 activities each participating country would make a commitment regarding the 2030 family planning program. In this case, Indonesia has 10 written commitments including how the Indonesian government provides adequate information services regarding family planning and provides good services based on the 2030 family planning commitment with all ICFP 2022 participating countries. Hundreds of countries from all over the world participated in this activity.
