Technical Session 1: Implementation of the Nairobi Commitments through South-South Cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era

The Deputy for Training, Research, and Development, Prof. Rizal Damanik, PhD has the honor to speak at the 17th International Inter-Ministerial Conference on South-South Cooperation in Population and Development for the technical session 1 on Implementation of the Nairobi Commitments through South-South Cooperation in the post-COVID-19 era, November 19th, 2020.

This technical session is organised by PPD, NHC and UNFPA jointly on how Southern countries will be able to work together during the post-COVID-19 period in implementing Nairobi Summit commitments through SSC and multilateralism. These agencies recognize the urgent need to and out the requirements of Southern countries post-COVID-19. The pandemic has had a profound impact on poverty, young women and elderly people as well as SRH services include unmet needs for family planning and maternal and child health and gender based violence. COVID-19 pandemic has made challenges everywhere in the world to achieve the Nairobi Summit Commitments, particularly three Zeros. In order to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and addressing the COVID-19 impact, it is important for developing countries to adopt or strengthen national policies to advance South-South cooperation and triangular cooperation, and to enhance the capacity of national and sub-national coordination mechanisms, as appropriate, in order to improve policy coordination, the sharing of knowledge, lessons learned and good practices, and the adaptation of such practices which was also encouraged by the outcome document of the BAPA40.

This session bring experts, leaders and policymakers together to innovate and establish action-driven solutions to address the critical challenges that countries are facing to attain these three Zeros in Southern countries. The discussion will bring various relevant viewpoints such as the impact of the pandemic and the use of the SSC modality. It could highlight the following: – What have been the commitments made, progress, and challenges faced – How has the pandemic affected the drive to achieve the ICPD PoA. – What should be COVID-19 response to continue the progress of action to fully achieve the ICPD and 2030 agenda through SSC? – How can we strengthen the capacity of health systems in post-COVID-19 using the knowledge, lessons learned and technical partnerships?
